We all love our cute workout clothes, but that doesn’t mean they always cooperate. Let’s be real — they are often spandex — sucking our fat and muscle together as tightly as possible, so there is a lot to worry about.

But who wants to think about that stuff when we’re trying to build muscle, endurance and get in a good workout on a busy day? Not me. Since I’ve been working out regularly for most of my life, I figured this would be a good chance to send some tips your ways!

3 Tips For Working Out Without Worry

1. Skip the Light & White.
I like white as much as anyone — for breezy capris or lace-style tops on a spring morning, that is. It’s a bad idea to work out in anything really light — especially white. Think about it:

  • White shoes get easily scuffed and dirty.
  • White spandex pants have a tendency to showcase every bump of cellulite (not that cellulite is bad but just looks awful when crammed into white pants).
  • Sports bras and tops soak up sweat stains like it’s their job.

Consensus? Even if those light baby blue workout capris look perfect, it’s probably better to go for a darker, more flattering hue.

2. Stay Protected.
Anyone that’s ever worked out on their period knows how important it is to wear a tampon or pad you can trust.

  • As a long distance runner, this can be scary stuff because I may be gone for 4 hours!
  • As a CrossFitter, it’s more scary because I’m often completing gymnastic-style moves like handstands, cartwheels, and jump rope.

The humiliation could be epic — and I’m telling you, a basic tampon will not work. When I found “U by Kotex” at Wal-Mart’s every day low price, I was intrigued and wanted to try them out. Wal-Mart is the best for this because you can try things out without spending a ton of money. Win-win.

I won’t name the other brand I was using before but let’s just say, they weren’t cutting it. It is so nice to be able to get out on the trail and focus on my tempo speed or get int he box and focus on completing the entire workout and not worry about whether or not I’m going to embarrass myself because of a “malfunction.”

3. Get The Right Sports Bra.
You can’t just grab any old sports bra off the rack and hope it works for you. Bigger busted ladies really need to consider what works for them — and I’m telling you the generic Target sports bra is not going to cut it.I used to buy those — until one day in college I was running past a frat house and was completely embarrassed when a bunch of guys started yelling something crude about “bouncing.” Yeah…stupid me.

I’m not a sports bra expert so I can’t tell you which one to buy but Self Magazine put out something that may help. I can tell you that I normally wear the basic Nike sports bra — very tight and and firm. I have also worn the Lululemon Ta Ta Tamer — which might be one of the few things at Lulu actually worth the investment! For lower impact workouts like yoga or barre, consider something less hardcore. I’ve been wearing the Reebok CrossFit sports bra.
