Even though I can’t run, that’s not going to stop me from being with runners — and especially supporting my guys and gals at Back on my Feet!

This weekend was the Run for Shelter 5k/10k to end homelessness and it was the first race many of our participants have ever done. Also, particularly meaningful since many of our members have been homeless in the past.

There is something really special about this for them. Most of these people had never considered that crossing a finish line with a race bib would be a part of their life.

Plus, for anyone who is attending their first race, the excitement and fun of the atmosphere is palpable. It’s just being part of something bigger than you — and bigger than the runs you do when you are not racing. It’s very cool.

You can usually tell if a BoMF chapter is at your race because we kind of draw a lot of attention to ourselves. There are usually a big group us forming a huge circle, loudly repeating the serenity prayer, doing lots of hugging and then a massive group warm up session.

We count loudly and make a lot of noise. We are more excited than most. Oh — and you are more than welcome to join us if you want so please do!

Once warmups were done, we only had about 5 minutes until race time. It was on! I so wished I was able to run with one of those doing their first race but I have to play it safe so I was just bundled up and ready to take some photos. I stopped at Starbucks and awaited their return.

Me and the ladies watching! BTW, obsessed with my new Under Armour hat

Those running their first race were doing the 5k so it didn’t take long. We have some really strong runners right now — even those who claim they have never been athletic in their life. We had another group doing the 10k — but I love cheering the whole time so I was ready to go! Check out some of my finishing photos:

One of my favorite parts of the day was the impromptou dance party that we rocked between races. The DJ was pretty good and every song just made you want to start dancing. Next thing I knew, I looked over and we had a dance circle going. It was so good, even a few randoms jumped in to participate with us! Ha! Here are a few of that experience:

The weather was perfect for this day and I could tell that everyone had a great time. To me, there is no better way to start a Saturday than early rising, sunshine and running. I hope those of you who haven’t done races will consider it! Perfect time is this Thursday where there are sure to be a million and one turkey trots all over the place! I’m even doing a Turkey Trot but walking it — all 5 miles baby! Gotta keep my spirits up 🙂
