This weekend was the 2nd annual Back on My Feet DC Open Mic night. Each team location was to perform a skit or song and individuals could sign up for talents as well. I wasn’t really sure what to expect and having been to a rare few open mic nights in my life, I was wondering about this one.

I was NOT disappointed! By the end of the night, my cheeks hurt from smiling and laughing so much at all of our wonderful acts. Some were funny or silly while others were chillingly deep. We had comedians, singers — even a magician!

I love this one of CSS because Herman is just gettin’ down.

After hearing a performance of Otis Redding’s “Sitting on the Dock of the Bay” and watching a well-coreographed and awesomely performed dance remix from the Baltimore crew, I can safely say the following were some of my favorites.

My video quality isn’t great but please listen to this amazing poem by a res member who has truly overcome:

I wish I could do a video montage of all my favorites because there were so many but I’ll leave you with one more of the best. This was a delight because I was not expecting someone to get on stage and leave me speechless. We ended up giving her a standing ovation — one of the only of the night:

The thing is, it’s Friday night. That’s a rough time for some people in recovery because Friday’s are a “party” night. Sometimes people have known nothing but heavy drinking and drugs — especially on these nights. So it was nice to have an activity that was full of joy and laughter that was sober as could be. I know I smiled more here than I have at any recent weekend outing.

Though some of our comedians got a little bit inappropriate with the jokes (there was no PC language goin’ on, let’s just put it that way!), we managed to see a few people shine.

Want to get involved with Back on my Feet? It’s easy and you can be as involved as you want. It can be from a fundraising perspective, running one day a week, helping at an event or getting as involved as being a team leader or coach.

BOMF welcomes any kind of giving you’ve got so check it out and attend an orientation meeting.
