The two most popular questions I get from this blog are these: What kind of running/workout shoes do you recommend? How do I get started as a runner? A friend asked me the latter last week and I decided I should put together a post on just that. It makes me excessively happy that people have found inspiration to beginning running from reading my blog and I'd love nothing more than to help. There was a time when I wasn't a runner either but you can change things if you wan to. 1. Just Get Started. Stop talking about it, stop thinking about it, just do it. You don't need the perfect day to start running, you just need to do it. So put on your shoes and go. On your first day, you aren't going to need a whole lot of time so no … [Read more...]
Richmond Marathon 2013: The One Where I Couldn’t Run
Well, here it is. Two days after the Richmond Marathon -- and I'm not the least bit sore. Many of you probably already saw on twitter that I had to make a last minute decision to drop on Thursday last week. Why I Dropped OutMy back has been giving me issues for months but the chiropractor had given me the okay to continue running -- with caution. Some of you, no doubt, wondered why I didn't just stop and get my back better.Well, I was stubborn and knew I was probably doing the wrong thing. However, since I could run pain-free and it didn't seem to make things better or worse, I really wanted to complete the marathon and then quit running for awhile.Had the race been even one week earlier, I'd have done it. Seven days out, though, things took … [Read more...]
I Love My Fitbit!
I've always been really bad at watches. I've had multiple running watches but always end up leaving them in a drawer in the end because I can't figure them out. I don't get it -- I'm cursed. These days, I usually rely on the RunKeeper app on my hone to keep track of what I ran. However, there's another little toy that I didn't know I would love. I was recently sent a Fitbit from Verizon to test out. I wasn't sure if it would be my thing. Luckily, it was easier to set up than any of the watches I owned and has a lot more cool stuff.I just downloaded the Fitbit app on my iPhone from the app store, then charged the Fitbit. Once it was fully charged, I slapped it on my wrist and went about my day.Let me tell you, those number tallies can get … [Read more...]
How To Run & Read On the Treadmill For Miles
Read on the treadmill. Wanna learn? I seem to have a special talent. I can read magazines and run for miles on the treadmill. Whenever I mention this in blog posts or in real life, people say "I don't know how you can read and run on the treadmill at the same time!" Maybe it's not for everyone but I might as well provide a few helpful tips for those that are interested in learning this magic skill. 1. Pick a Fluffy Read. Don't try reading The Economist on the treadmill. My go-tos include: People (favorite!), Glamour, Self, Shape, Runner's World and Women's Fitness. They usually include lists, colors, boxes of text and easy to read articles. Your eyes can bounce around and not lose too much. 2. Run on a … [Read more...]
