Hold Up, Mr. Perfect

February 17, 2010 by Ericka

I've recently become obsessed with Bravo's "Millionaire Matchmaker" -- almost entirely due to the show's host and creator, Patti Stanger. I used to shun the world of reality TV but both The Bachelor and Millionaire have stolen my heart, so to speak. Why do I love Patti? Let me count the ways. She's fun, she's direct, she's confident and she's no feminista when it comes to dating. The show takes young millionaires looking for love and screens girls interested in them to set them up in matchmaker heaven. Patti believes in women being women and men being men. She demands her guys be perfect gentlemen and assesses each first date with the cruel tsking every clueless dater needs to hear. I've had a recent dating epiphany and so dating shows are … [Read more...]

Robert Gibbs is a Joke (And the joke’s on the White House)

February 10, 2010 by Ericka

I’m disgusted by White House Press Secretary Robert Gibbs. I won’t take a cheap shot at him for saying “uhhhh” too much but his behavior is not representative of the President of the United States. He is blatantly disrespectful to conservative groups and downright condescending to the Tea Party movement. Gibbs – and the The White House – do themselves harm by pretending the Tea Party is a silly group of idiots. They do it all the time. I see the President roll his eyes and Gibbs is constantly chuckling that the White House Press Corps even asks about these folks. Do they not realize that these people – the grassroots majority in America – have changed the trajectory of the 2010 election season? That America’s most liberal President has born … [Read more...]

Taylor Swift Didn’t Deserve the VMA Award but I Still Love Her

February 8, 2010 by Ericka

This chick from from "Autostraddle" does a number on Taylor Swift and I'm still not sure why. Somehow I read through the whole damn piece, in which she rails on Taylor for being a good hearted, big dreaming, boy crazy, innocent living young girl. The author hopes her kids are more like innovative rockstar Lady Gaga than curly-haired crooner Taylor. She doesn't think Taylor should have won so many awards because she copied ideas from songs past -- and god forbid a copycat be filed in award history with the likes of U2. Oh also, two hits against Taylor for having a good childhood (and being -- freak of all freaks -- homeschooled) which apparently means she doesn't deserve to win things. In a world where our superstars aren't always awesome … [Read more...]

Catelynn from MTV’s “Teen Mom” is My Hero

February 8, 2010 by Ericka

It may sound strange but I’ve always been drawn to girls who face the situation of unexpected pregnancy. Though I don’t think the “Teen Mom” show on MTV is ultimately helpful for teen viewers, I have watched it with interest. The story of Catelynn and Tyler should be required viewing. These two sixteen-year-olds have wisdom and maturity beyond their years. Both kids come from unstable households and have decided they aren’t ready for a baby. Their parents berate them for “giving away” their child while Catelynn and Tyler stand firm in their decision to give their child a better life. I couldn’t help but fall in love with them. They have been together since seventh grade and they clearly love each other. Choosing adoption is such a heroic … [Read more...]
