I went to church this morning and they showed this video, from the site 21Martyrs.com. To be honest, I’ve not let myself think too deeply about the 21 Christian men who were killed last week by ISIS.

It’s so hard to think about. So hard. Until today, I hadn’t looked at their faces. They were — they are — my brothers in Christ and so their murders were close to my heart.

They died because they love Jesus and when I look at their faces in this video, I see pure courage. God must have been with them and I just pray He provided peace in those last moments. And now I pray that He will provide that same peace and courage for the Christians that will be killed in the Middle East in the coming days. Because they aren’t stopping.

Churches around the country today stood in a moment of silence for these 21 men who were lost. We can do nothing but pray, we can do nothing but love, we can do nothing but hope. I hope ISIS is defeated soon. But there will always be another group waiting in the wings — and I’m just lucky I was born in a place that’s currently rather safe.

My heart is with the families of these men. I know they’re in a much better place now.

Since the first century, Christians have endured persecution. Yet in the midst of death, the Church remained alive and hopeful remembering Jesus’ promise, “Blessed are those who are persecuted because of righteousness, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.” {Matthew 5:10}
