Today, I want to tell you a little bit about my Crossfit box.

Why? Because it’s awesome.

I only discovered Trident Crossfit because it happens to be half a mile down the road from my house. In this city, having something that close is  miracle. I seriously love the fact that I can walk there and back each time I go.

I was skeptical when I started Crossfit. I heard so much about it from this girl’s blog that she really convinced me to try. I thought, how can someone who is like me be so into something like this so quickly? I couldn’t NOT check it out. Oh yeah and Lisa — who used to go to Trident — also convinced me via Twitter!

So I googled around, found Trident and signed up for an intro session. I kept wanting to put it off. My back hurt a bit so I put it off for about a month. I didn’t think I’d actually sign up.

But, I went that first day and loved the atmosphere. A six-month commitment seemed like a long time as I’d be going at least three times a week. However, I took a chance and signed up.

As most of you know, I quickly fell in love with it. I didn’t know why necessarily but I think it was a combination of things.

1) Variety & motion. I love WODs because they are full of variety, rounds and easily calculated ways to measure your progress. I love how they are fairly fast but you put your whole body into it. I love how they work all different muscle groups and everyday is something new.

2) People. I don’t really know the folks in my classes but I know we all really love Crossfit. That’s why we keep showing up at 6am every morning. You know you are among kindred spirits who probably also talk about Crossfit when they are not there. The energy is palpable.

3) Coaches. The coaches at Trident are super-friendly, motivating and good teachers. They always take the time to cater to new folks or those who aren’t getting  move right. They remember your name and seem glad to see you. They bring the energy when yours is lacking. They also love Crossfit and the love is so obvious you can’t help but catch some of it.

4) Music. There is always a good playlist on here. The right song can be crucial to a good workout sometimes — so the playlist matters. It’s up LOUD, you are sweating like a pig, you are hurting like you’ll never walk again, your breathing so hard your heart feels like it will pop out of your chest — and you are  In. The. Moment. This moment is all that matters — giving it your all. It reminds of during the last few miles of a marathon when nothing else matters in the world but finishing.

Since I joined Crossfit, I’ve had a lot of opportunities because of this blog. The most important one has been working with Reebok to help promote their brand, their line of clothing, shoes and more. I was able to travel to Reebok World Headquarters for a tour and demo, and I receive new clothes each month to review.

Crossfit Games Champ & World’s Fittest Man Rich Froning & I

Because Reebok is THE brand of Crossfit, it has been amazing. I’ve been able to meet some of the world’s best Crossfitters, like Rich Froning and Julie Fouche. I’ve been mesmerized by the Games and simply taken over by the contagious spirit of the sport.

That being said, of course I want everyone I know to get involved. If you are in the DC-area, I’d recommend trying out Trident Crossfit. I’ve heard from many folks that this box is THE box to join in this area — the professionalism and skill of the coaches is unmatched. I love the description of what people can expect when they sign up:

Our program is designed for scalability and applies equally well to all individuals regardless of age or fitness level. By varying the load and intensity, we start you at a level appropriate to your fitness and experience.

With commitment and hard work you will achieve greater general fitness and a high degree of athleticism. We take an old-school approach emphasizing fundamental, functional movements with proper technique.

You will learn and get fit with ever-changing workouts that combine bodyweight exercises, weightlifting, and a huge variety of high-intensity drills that combine cardio and strength challenges at the appropriate level for each person. The stimulus provided is always varied and the results are dramatic. The atmosphere is one of support and camaraderie to anyone willing to put in the work.

I’ll be writing about some of the awesome things we are doing at Trident as time goes on. It’s not just about doing Crossfit classes 3-5 times a week. This box and this brand as a whole are dedicated to helping others, honoring America’s military and seeking out the ways we can all be the very best people we can be.

Have I convinced you yet? DC folks — talk to me if you have questions about Trident. Everyone else — find your local box & sign up!
